We have profiled the QuestBridge National College Match Program, but today’s scholarship program is the QuestBridge College Prep Scholarship Program.  QuestBridge is a really wonderful organization that helps low-income students access education through partnerships with some of the most selective institutions in the country.

The Prep Scholarship Program provides over 1,500 awards for students.  These awards include:

• College counseling through QuestBridge
• Full scholarships to summer programs at colleges
• Paid trips to campuses

To be eligible for this scholarship students must:

• Be current high school juniors
• Have an annual family income of less then $60,000

Additionally, the scholarship committee will be looking at students’ academic performance.  The QuestBridge site also notes that “many past award recipeients have also been part of the first generation in their family to attend college.”

In our Scholarships360 page on college-specific scholarships, we note that “some of the best (highest dollar amount) scholarships are college-specific scholarships that colleges and universities offer as part of their aid packages.” With March Madness right around the corner, I couldn’t think of a better school to profile that offers these types of scholarships than one of the schools most synonymous with college basketball- the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The myriad of merit-based scholarships offered by UNC are for both in-state and out-of-state applicants. This year alone, UNC awarded “approximately $2.8 million in academic merit scholarships for 2011-2012 to 143 first-year students.” These scholarships could be like the College Fellows Awards, which awards $2,500 per year go to North Carolina residents who intend to pursue majors in the College of Arts and Sciences, or like the Col. John H. and Lillian T. Robinson Scholarships, which awards either $5,000 (in-state) or $16,478 (out-of-state) to academically high-achieving students.

There are too many scholarships offered by Chapel Hill to list each and every one here. I would recommend perusing the UNC Merit-Based Aid site, which has links to and descriptions of these awards, along with instructions on how to apply for them. For even more information, look at this great UNC admissions blog post on the topic. Keep in mind that, for many of these awards, you will simply be notified that you have won if you apply and meet the qualifications (which, unfortunately, are typically pretty competitive!). To be eligible for this scholarship, students must be from one of the eligible colleges/universities.  The complete list can be found on the scholarship application and includes Kansas State University, University of Kansas, University of Missouri, and Wichita State University. 

This scholarship provides financial assistance of $1,000 for winning students!  Not a bad deal!  In addition to the monetary award, students also receive:

• A mentor from the AAF-KC
• 1 year of membership in the AAF-KC Professional organization
• Networking events through the AAF-KC

Today’s scholarship is sponsored by the Simon Youth Foundation.  The Simon Youth Foundation is a non-profit organization based out of Indianapolis, Indiana that deals with supporting educational opportunities for students “at risk of dropping out of high school.”  To be eligible for this scholarship, students must plan to use the award towards their undergraduate education.

One of the educational opportunities that the Simon Youth Foundation Community Scholarship Program.  This scholarship is for students who are from communities that host Simon shopping centers.  When examining applicants, the scholarship committee will be looking at the following factors:

• academic achievement
• improvements or contributions made to the community
• future potential of each applicant
• the environment/experience of the applicant

This scholarship program has multiple phases. First, you apply for the program by May 1, 2012. Then, semi-final entries are reviewed by regional selection committees, and then the finalists are interviewed in person or via video conference. You will know if you won this $10,000 scholarship by the end of October, 2012.

Today’s scholarship is the Dr. Alma S. Adams Scholarship for Outreach and Health Communications.  This scholarship is offered by Legacy, which is a non-profit organization that “is dedicated to building a world where young people reject tobacco and anyone can quit.”  This scholarship is worth $5,000 and Legacy will be awarding two separate awards.

This scholarship is for students studying at an accredited undergraduate or graduate school in the US.  Successful applicants will be committed to serving low-income communities and other underrepresented groups (these groups generally have higher rates of smoking) in regards to tobacco prevention/control.  The scholarship committee will also be looking at how applicants raise awareness of tobacco in a creative and culturally appropriate way.

To be eligible students must:

• Demonstrate financial need
• Have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA (for the most recent academic year)
• Pursue a degree in public health, communications, social work, education, or liberal arts (note, related majors/fields will also be considered)
• Submit two letters of recommendation

Whose four faces would you place on a 21st Century Mount Rushmore type of monument and why? The persons must be non-fictional, US citizens, male or female–the time frame for selection is 1850 to 2011.

The application for this scholarship can be found as a PDF online. Applicants must write a (maximum) 250 word essay on either how their academic studies will impact their future, or they can evaluate a significant experience, achievement or ethical dilemma they’ve faced and its impact on them.
