Even though Calvin Johnson was a hated foe in the 2006 ACC Championship Game, he is doing some great things in the Detroit community.  Notably, Johnson is offering six scholarships through the Calvin Johnson Jr. Foundation.  

The deadline for this scholarship is May 25, 2012 and students are encouraged to e-mail the scholarship committee (cjjrf81@yahoo.com) for applications.

To be eligible for this scholarship students must be student athletes and a minimum of a 2.5 high school GPA.  Additionally, if students will be playing football in college, they must have no more than a partial scholarship to play.

This is a really simple scholarship–entries are judged SOLELY on the essay–students are asked to write an essay of 1,000 words or less on this topic:

Discuss, in less than 1000 words, how your education has contributed to who you are today, or how it will affect who you will become.

The 2012 AFSA Second Chance Scholarship Program

This scholarship is convenient in that no essay is required. Instead, just read the “Fire Sprinkler Essay” (pdf) or (html) about automatic fire sprinklers and then complete  a ten-question multiple-choice test. For each correct answer, you will be entered into the scholarship drawing one time (so a total of 10 entries into the drawing is possible). Keep in mind that you can only complete the test once- if you try to do so more than once, you will automatically be disqualified. The essay can be found on the AFSA website, as can the online quiz.

You can enter this contest until August 22, 2012. Winners’ names will be posted on the AFSA web site on September 12, 2012. Good luck!

This year, the theme of the scholarship is “I declare! What it took to declare our independence.”  

Scholarships will be awarded to three students–the winning award is worth $5,000, second place is worth $500, and third place is awarded $250.

The essay must be at least 1500 words (the scholarship rules were very clear about this, an essay that is 1499 words will not be considered).  Additionally, the scholarship committee will be looking at the following factors when evaluating essays:

• Creativity
• Theme Development
• Clarity of ideas
• Mechanics (grammar, spelling, punctuation, structure)

For the application, you must write an essay  which looks at:

how your college experience is or will be enabled by remarkable frugality, ingenuity, effort or thrift.

Suggested topics include student loans, other scholarships and grants, personal savings, working full or part time while in school, and any other creative or remarkable approach to paying for college or saving money as a student. The deadline for the Shop Smart Scholarship is June 1, 2012, and winners will be notified by July 1, 2012. Today’s scholarship is sponsored by the Former Majority Association for Equality (FMAFE) which is an organization that believes that “race and gender has no place on any application.”  I am sure you have noticed that there are not many scholarship simply for white males (we actually have not found any), so the F.M.A.F.E. Scholarship aims to help that demographic.

It should be noted that the F.M.A.F.E. has no racial agenda and does not accept donations from those who do (ie: white supremacy organizations, etc.)  This scholarship is essay-based.

Unfortunately, the deadline for this scholarship has passed, but last year the scholarship deadline was in November.  If you want to reach out to the scholarship committee at any point, feel free to contact them through their website.

To be eligible for this program, you must:

• Be a U.S. citizen with a baccalaureate degree from an accredited school
• Be enrolled in (or have a letter or acceptance from) an accredited graduate program in the U.S. or Puerto Rico (varies by specialty)
• Maintain full-time student status during the length of the program
• Qualify as a commissioned officer in the United States Army Reserve

SWE provides one application for sophomores through graduate students and one application for freshmen.  Applicants complete an application and are considered for all scholarships that they are eligible for. Essentially, you’re entering twenty or thirty scholarship competitions while spending time on just one application! All of the various scholarships being offered can be viewed on the SWE website- they range in dollar amount (from $1,400 to $15,000) and in who they are for (freshmen, sophomores, etc.). The requirements also vary for freshman versus sophomore-grad students. Unfortunately, the Sophomores through Graduate Students Application closed on February 15th, although the Freshman Application is open until May 15th. Today’s scholarship is the Spring 2012 Gen and Kelly Tanabe Scholarship.  We profiled this scholarship last year and loved it, because it is so open.  This opportunity is open to all students, of all ages, and can be used towards college or university at the undergraduate or graduate level!  The winning students will receive a $1,000 award.

This scholarship is completely merit-based so financial-need is not something that is considered by the scholarship committee.  Additionally, test scores, transcripts, any past academic performance will not be considered.  What will be considered you may ask?  The essay.  The goal of this opportunity is to offer a level playing field for students, which is why the essay is the only consideration.

The essay should be short (250 words or less) and should answer one of the following questions:

• Why do you deserve to win this scholarship?
• Describe your academic or career goals.
• Pick your own topic.
