Today’s scholarship is for students who currently attend HBCUs.  Specifically, the Tom Joyner Foundation & Denny’s Hungry for Education Scholarship will award ten scholarships worth $2,500.  The Historically Black Colleges and Universities that are included in this program include:

The scholarship application for this program is available online.  This scholarship includes an essay component and students are asked to write 500 words on “how Denny’s can impact childhood hunger in the United States.”

Who ie eligible for this scholarship?

To be eligible, you must fit the following criteria:

• Be current high school seniors who are residents of Orange County, CA or Salt Lake County, UT.
• Plan to enroll in full-time undergraduate study at an accredited two- or four-year college or university for the entire upcoming academic year pursuing a STEM major.
• Be United States citizens or legal residents.
• Demonstrate financial need

What is selection based off of?

Recipients are selected on the basis of academic record, demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities, honors, work experience, statement of goals and aspirations, unusual personal or family circumstances, and an outside appraisal.

What do recipients receive?

If selected as a recipient, the student will receive a $2,500 award, which can be used for tuition, fees, books and supplies only. Up to ten (10) awards will be granted each year. Awards may be renewed for up to three additional years or until a bachelor’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first. Renewal is contingent upon continuing to major in a STEM field of study and satisfactory academic performance of maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or the equivalent) and continuation of the program by Edwards Lifesciences.

Zinch Adventurer Scholarship

Today’s scholarship, the Zinch Adventurer Scholarship, is offered through a series of scholarships called Weird World of Wonderful Scholarships.  This scholarship is essay-based and will award a $1,000 scholarship!

Who is eligible?

Current high school students are eligible for this scholarship (including current high school seniors).  The only other requirement is that students must be from the United States.

Where is the application?

The application can be found and completed online.  The format for this scholarship is multiple-choice mini-essay.  Students are asked to respond to one of three essay prompts.  Responses should be 280 characters or less

The 2014 Vegetarian Resource Group Scholarships are currently being offered. These are two scholarships worth $5,000 each. If you have been following Scholarships360 for some time, you will realize that this particular scholarship is profiled each year–because both of Scholarships360′s founder are vegetarians, or because it is simply a great scholarship program to apply for, I cannot say.

Who is eligible?

The contest is open to all graduating high school students in the U.S. who have promoted vegetarianism in their schools and/or communities.

Today’s scholarship, the Big Sun Scholarship 2013, is sponsored by the BigSun Organization.  The aim of the Big Sun Athletic Organization is to “provide an opportunity for young athletes to learn and to excel.” One of the ways that Big Sun meets these aims is through their scholarship program!

Am I eligible for this scholarship?

To be eligible for this scholarship, students must be student athletes (athletes in all sports are able to apply).  Students must either be high school seniors who current post-secondary students (attending a college, university, or community college).

Where is the application?

The application can be found online.  This scholarship is essay-based and asks students to write a short essay in response to the following prompt:

What are your most important extracurricular or community activities?   What made you join these activities?  What made you continue to contribute to them?

Interested in attending a top national university but worried about the costs? Don’t ignore the fact that many schools offer merit scholarships to their top applicants. For example, Boston College offers the Boston College Presidential Scholars Program. This program offers a full-tuition scholarship to Boston College, along with a variety of opportunities to the scholars once they are attending (such as summer funding, small lectures with well-known speakers, and more).

Who ie eligible for this scholarship?

Any exceptional student applying to Boston College through their Early Action program is eligible. According to BC admission’s website: “To apply to be a Boston College Presidential Scholar you simply apply through BC’s Early Action application process and meet the early action deadline of November 1st. There is no separate Presidential Scholars application form.” In selection Presidential Scholars, “there is no minimum GPA or SAT score requirement. However, we are looking for students with outstanding academic records, who hold leadership roles in their school and who are committed to and have a demonstrated interest in community service. Typically, the students selected are in the top 1-2 percent of the national pool of freshman applicants.”

Deadline and application

The American Legion Baseball Scholarship

Today’s scholarship, the American Legion Baseball Scholarship, is sponsored by the The American Legion.  This scholarship is for students who play baseball for an American Legion baseball team.

Who ie eligible for this scholarship?

To be eligible for this program, students must be on a 2013 American Legion Baseball team roster.  Students must also be nominated by their team manager or head coach (teams must be affiliated with an American Legion post).  Finally, to be eligible (and nominated) students must have graduated from high school.

What does the application include?

The scholarship application can be found online and includes the following:

• High school academic information (including a copy of your transcript)
• Several short essays
• Family and financial information
• Photograph
• Three letters of recommendation

Letters of recommendation should come from your American Legion teach coach/manager, an American Legion Post Commander or Adjutant, and a community leader (ie: teacher, priest, etc.).

When are completed applications due?

All applications are due July 15, 2013!

The Nation is currently offering the 2013 Nation Student Writing Contest. The contest asks students to respond to the following prompt in an “original, thoughtful, provocative” voice: “It’s clear that the political system in the US isn’t working for many. If you had to pick one root cause underlying our broken politics, what would it be and why?”

Who is eligible?

The contest is open to all matriculating high school students and undergraduates at US schools, colleges and universities as well as those receiving either high school or college degrees in 2013.

Contest details

Essays shouldn’t exceed 800 words and should be original, unpublished work that demonstrates fresh, clear thinking and superior quality of expression and craftsmanship. Ten finalists and two winners total will be selected—six from college students, six from high schoolers. Winners will receive $1,000 each, finalists $200.

Application and deadline

Entries will be accepted through Saturday, June 30, 2013. If successful, you’ll be notified on Monday, September 9. As for submission details: submissions and questions can be e-mailed to studentprize@thenation.com (include the essay in the body of the e-mail). Each entry must include author’s name, address, phone number, e-mail and short biography and school affiliation—and say “student essay” in the subject line

Today’s profile scholarship program takes us across the pond to the U.K. The BAFTA Scholarship Programme is currently accepting applications to “talented people in need of financial support to study a post-graduate course in film, television or games.”

Who is eligible?

There is a list of eligible courses (degree programs and schools, too) that can be found online.

What is each scholarship worth?

Each scholarship will provide up to £10,000 to cover one year’s course fees, an industry mentor and free access to BAFTA events around the UK for a year. In return, scholarship recipients are required to contribute to the BAFTA Guru online learning channel and take part in BAFTA’s outreach activity to young people.
