The Marten Bequest Travelling Scholarships are currently being offered “to provide financial support for talented Australian artists to help them achieve their dreams.” Yes, this (as per the requests of several readers) is a scholarship for international students- specifically, those born in Australia and aged 21-35 (17-35 for ballet) at the closing date of entries. The scholarships are awarded in five different areas of art: architecture, ballet, instrumental music, poetry, and prose. Each scholarship is worth $20,000 and is payable over two years with funds paid in quarterly instalments of $2,500.
To apply for one of the Marten Bequest Travelling Scholarships, you must fill out the online application form. After indicating which scholarship (of the five offered) that you will be applying for, you must fill out several short essays. These involve your aims and activities to clearly identify how you will use scholarship funds, the budget of your proposed aims and activities, audition pieces (for singing and instrumental music) of a high quality, and three references from relevant teachers, mentors etc.
Applications close on January 27, 2012. If you plan on applying, check out their “help notes” PDF (downloadable here) and the hints and tips page. Finally, for a better idea of who exactly wins these scholarships, check out their directory of past winners. Good luck!
