The FRA (Fleet Reserve Association) is currently offering the Americanism Essay Contest for students in grades 7-12. Similar to the Free To Tweet Scholarship (due Dec. 15, 2011), this contest asks students to respond to the theme: What Freedom of Speech Means to Me. According to the FRA website: “The contest includes a Grand National Prize of a $10,000 U.S. Savings Bond, with $5,000, $3,000 and $2,000 Savings Bonds awarded to the first, second and third place winners in each grade category. All regional winners are judged at the national level and receive a certificate of recognition. Other prizes are awarded at the branch and regional levels.”
To enter this contest, you must be sponsored by an FRA member- if you are looking for a sponsor, you can find one through a drop-down menu on the FRA’s essay contest webpage. Essays must be relatively short, not exceeding 350 words, can be handwritten (if done neatly) or typed, and all entries must be submitted by December 1, 2011. To enter, mail the completed essay and cover sheet to the branch nearest your home. For more info, check out the Flyer about FRA Essay Contest, the Required Essay Cover Sheet, or the Essay Contest Rules. Good luck!
