It is not secret that the United States is falling behind the rest of the world in regards to the STEM subjects.  STEM subjects refer to science, mathematics, and research for transformation.  However, as with any crisis, opportunities present themselves.  In the case of the STEM subjects, this opportunity is in the form of a scholarship.

The SMART Scholarship Program was established by the United States Department of Defense.  The requirements for this scholarship program are:

  • Enrollment in a college/university in the USA
  • Applicants have to be 18 years or older by August 1, 2012
  • Students must have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA
The final requirement for the scholarship is that you must be willing “to accept post-graduate employment with the Department of Defense.”

This is a really awesome opportunity for students and in addition to the prospect of post-graduate employment (!) you will get:

  • Full tuition and education related fees (does not include items such as meal plans, housing, or parking)
  • Cash award paid at a rate of $25,000 – $41,000 depending on prior educational experience (may be prorated depending on award length)
  • Paid summer internships
  • Health Insurance reimbursement allowance up to $1,200 per calendar year
  • Book allowance of $1,000 per academic year
  • Mentoring
Overall, it is a pretty sweet deal.
The scholarship program closes December 1, 2011 so you still have almost a month to get it in!  Check out the scholarship website for more details!
