The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) is current hosting their annual Freedom in Academia Essay Contest. This contest is open to all graduating high school seniors (graduating in spring of 2012) who plan to attend a college or university.
Essays must range from 800 to 1,000 words and answer the question “Why is free speech important at our nation’s colleges and universities?” Watch the two videos on the scholarship page for ideas on where to get started, and also familiarize yourself with FIRE’s mission (to defend and sustain individual rights at America’s colleges and universities) in order to write your essay most effectively. One first place winner will receive a $5,000 college scholarship, one second place winner will receive a $2,500 scholarship, and five runners-up will each receive $1,000 scholarships.
The deadline for this essay is November 5, 2011; winners will be announced on December 16, 2011. Good luck!
