The American Copy Editors Society is an organization dedicated to “empowering editors to be their best.” In accordance with this goal, the Society hosts an annual scholarship program for college juniors, seniors, and graduate students who have demonstrated an interest in and aptitude for copy editing.
The Society offers a variety of scholarships: the Merv Aubespin Scholarship is worth $2,500 (one will be given out), and there are 4 other scholarships worth $1,000 each. Applications to this scholarship must be mailed in; for an idea of what to include on your application, look at the PDF brochure for the scholarship. Your application should include a list of course work (relevant to copy editing), a list of your copy editing experience, an essay on what makes a good editor and why you want to be a copy editor, two recommendation letters, and copies of five to ten headlines you’ve written.
The scholarships must be applied to by November 15, 2011. If you have any questions, direct them by e-mail to Deirdre Edgar at dedgar@copydesk.org. Best of luck!
