The Susan G. Komen for the Cure is a major leader in the breast cancer movement, and has invested more than $1.9 billion since its 1982 creation. Along with providing funding for research, this organization also runs the generous Komen College Scholarship Program. This program is to assist students who “would find attending college to be a significant financial burden due to the loss of a parent or guardian to breast cancer or their own breast cancer diagnosis at age 25 or younger“.
This program for college students/high school seniors awards a scholarships of $10,000 per year for up to four years (so, if it renewed each time, up to $40,000!). To apply, fill out the Komen College Scholarship online application (you will have to make an account before being able to access the app). Applicants will be judge off of a variety of criteria, including applicants’ financial need, community involvement, essay content, letters of reference, academic achievements or records, and college GPA will also considered (but only if the applicant is already enrolled in an institution).
The deadline for the Komen College Scholarship is November 15, 2011. For more information about this program, check out their list of FAQs and, if you are ineligible, always consider donating to the foundation. Best of luck!
