The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program is an annual program that awards up to $7,500 per year for for tuition, fees, books, and room and board to qualified students. According to the scholarship program’s website, the scholarships serve “a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers by awarding scholarships to college students who intend to pursue careers in these fields.”
Up to 300 Goldwater Scholarships will be awarded this year.This competitive program is open to college sophomores and juniors who have GPAs of at least a B and have proper citizenship status. The number of scholarships to be awarded per state depends on the number and qualifications of the nominees from the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and (considered as a single entity) Guam, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

This program has a number of deadlines to keep in mind: the application deadline is January 27, 2012, the recommender deadline is January 30, 2011, the nomination deadline is January 31, 2011, and all supporting documents (typed essay, college transcripts, citizenship status if applicable) must be received by February 1, 2012. In total, this application requires two recommendations from faculty members, a recommendation from someone who supervised research, and a typed, two-page essay (along with the previously mentioned “supporting documents”).
