Google and the Associated Press have teamed up to offer a new scholarship program to students interested in a career in journalism. This scholarship program is part of the $5 million dollar pledge that Google made to innovations in digital news this past October.

It is news to no one (no pun intended) that new media and the internet have permanently changed the way we access the news.  From Facebook to Twitter to blogging, the journalism field has changed and it is crucial that aspiring journalists develop skills in digital and new media.

The AP-Google Journalism and Technology Scholarship program is open to college students (sophomores, juniors, and seniors) and graduate students who are pursuing degrees “related to the intersection of journalism, computer science, and new media in the 2012 t0 2013 academic year.”

This scholarship will be awarded to six students and is worth $20,000!

The scholarship application is available online and has three parts.  The scholarship website also notes that applicants must have “active links to materials they have uploaded elsewhere.”  You can do this through Google Docs, DropBox, or even through your own website (Weebly and WordPress are both great!).

The first part of the application is simple enough–it is just basic contact and personal information (name, telephone, university, etc.)

The second part of the application will take a bit longer…

  1. Personal statement presentation or cover letter (you can be creative when choosing the format of this)
  2. Resume
  3. Photograph (of yourself)
  4. List all of your social networking profiles (Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Google +, Tumblr, etc.)
  5. Give three examples of your work in digital/new media journalism and/or computer science
  6. Project/Concept*

The Project/Concept part of this should answer the question:

“Have you created original journalistic content with computer science elements? Do you have an idea to develop new ways of telling a story with technology? The scholarship committee is looking for projects or concepts that show innovation and creativity. Applicant should explain how your strategy moves digital journalism forward or provides valuable lessons or outcomes.”  (The AP-Google scholarship site gives some potential ideas for applicants to use)

The final part of the application includes:

  1. Letter of recommendation that discusses the applicants interests/experiences in the field of digital/new media journalism.
  2. Copies of the applicant’s official transcript
  3. An optional Statement of Unmet Financial Need Form
To keep you organized, the website provides a handy checklist for you to use!
This scholarship is due January 27, 2012!
If applicants have any questions they can contact the Scholarship Manager Irving Washingtoniwashington@journalists.org
Best of luck to all applicants!
