Freedom of speech is integral to the identity of America and the first amendment in the constitution of the United  States.

The Foundation for Individual Rights in Higher Education (or FIRE for short) is an organization that  is dedicated to protecting and promoting individual rights at colleges and universities in the United States.

Each year FIRE offers scholarships to high school seniors through their “Freedom in Academia” Essay Contest.  This is a really generous scholarship opportunity for students.  The award breakdown is:

  • First place, $5,000
  • Second place, $2,500
  • Five runners up will receive $1,000
This scholarship is essay-based.  To get started, the scholarship committee suggests that students familiarize themselves with both the FIRE website and mission.  FIRE also put up a few short videos on the scholarship page for students to check out.
The essay prompt is:
Why is free speech important at our nation’s colleges and universities? Using examples from both videos, discuss how these universities violated the featured students’ rights and why these violations are incompatible with higher education.

Essays should be between 800 and 1,000 words.

Students can access the scholarship application online.

The scholarship is due November 5, 2011 and winners will be announced by December 16!

Best of luck to all applicants!
