Say what you will about Ayn Rand’s philosophy of Objectivism, but one truth cannot be ignored: the Ayn Rand Institute offers a lot of essay contests! The Atlas Shrugged Essay Contest is open to all high school seniors, college undergraduate students, and graduate students. This contest has a variety of prizes, including a first place prize of $10,000, 3 second place prizes of $2,000, 5 third place prizes of $1,000, 25 finalist prizes of $100, and 50 semifinalist prizes of $50.
Essays are to respond to one of the following three prompts about Rand’s book Atlas Shrugged:
- What do you think is meant, in Part III of Atlas Shrugged, by the phrase “utopia of greed”?
- Why does Francisco D’Anconia, heir to the greatest fortune in the world and a productive genius with boundless ambition,change his course and pose as, of all things, a playboy?
- What does the story of Atlas Shrugged have to say about the relative powers of good and evil and the conditions under which one is victorious over the other?.
This essay (no traditional application required) is due on September 17th, 2011. Your essay can either be submitted electronically, or mailed to:
