No, Jersey Cattle is not cattle from my home state, but a breed of small dairy cattle that is the cause of a number of great scholarships each year.
The American Jersey Cattle Association offers a wide variety of scholarships each year to those interested in the field (no pun intended). The scholarships are for entering-college students to those in graduate school, and, in total $15,000 is given out each year. These scholarships include:
- Jack C. Nisbet Memorial Scholarship (limited to nominees, National Jersey Youth Achievement Contest)
- Paul Jackson Memorial Scholarship
- V. L. Peterson Scholarship
- William A. Russell Memorial Scholarship
- Reuben R. Cowles Youth Award
- Cedarcrest Farms Scholarship
- Russell-Malnati Scholarship for Advanced Studies (specific requirements apply, see below)
- Bob Toole Youth Award
Some of these scholarships require that the applicant be a member of the American Jersey Cattle Association, while nearly all of them must be postmarked by July 1, 2011. On the scholarship page (here is the link again) you can download the word document applications for these scholarships, which, aside from including the application itself, also lists the criteria that the applicant must fit. These vary by what type of degree you are pursuing (large animal veterinary practice, dairy production, dairy manufacturing, dairy product marketing, and so on), what state you’re in, etc., so read the fine print on your respective scholarship carefully.
If you have any questions about these scholarships, direct them to info@usjersey.com. As always, best of luck!
