National Civil War Student Challenge Scholarship

I have always been fascinated with the Civil War.  Ever since my eight grade class took a trip to Gettsyburg, and my teacher Mr. Aronis marched us up Little Round Top, I have loved learning about it.  Naturally, in college I was a history major and wrote my thesis on Cherokee Indians who fought for the Confederacy.  Plus, this year marks the 150th year anniversary of the Civil War, so I thought it would be timely to seek out a related scholarship:

Today’s fabulous college scholarship opportunity is sponsored by the History Channel and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.  The scholarship is actually in the form of a trivia challenge and is open to all students between the ages of 13 and 19.  The National Civil War Student Challenge begins on April 7th 2011, so interested students can brush up on their Civil War trivia.

The Challenge begins with a 50 question multiple choice test.  The top 30 scorers will be eligible to participate in the Final Round where they will be given a written test.  For more details about the official rules of the Challenge, you can check out the website.

There are over $30,000 worth of awards available to students, with the winner receiving $15,000 to use towards college.

Interested students can register for the Challenge online.  On the website there is also a handy study guide to download to help prepare for the contest.  If I was participating in this contest, I would also talk to my AP or Honors United States History teacher about some extra material to go over.
