phillips Stephen Phillips Memorial ScholarshipThe Stephen Phillips Memorial Scholarship is a scholarship fund in the memory of Stephen Phillips, a Massachusetts philanthropist, who was interested in helping students with financial need.  The scholarship is open to both high school seniors and current college students, but we are going to specifically talk about the high school opportunity.

The deadline for this opportunity is April 30, 2011 and is renewable for an additional three years.  The awards range in value from $3,000 to $10,000 per year.

This is a really great opportunity that has given over $30 million dollars to students since 1991.  Because he was from New England, the Phillips Scholarship is only open to residents of ConnecticutMaineMassachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, or Vermont.

Also, because financial need is a large factor in the scholarship, interested students need tofind out if their are financially eligible.

If you are financially eligible, you can begin the application process which includes one long essay and two short answer essays. Additionally, you will need two letters of recommendation. There is a separate application for students interested in renewing their award.

The scholarship website also provides some detailed instructions on how to fill out the application as well as a list of additional resources.
