and who have few assets. International students are welcome to apply. The National Geographic Student Expeditions Scholarship Program

This is a pretty unique scholarship program- it allows students to study and travel abroad in a National Geographic program to a large number of countries, ranging from Peru, to Ecuador, to Tanzania, to Iceland, and Australia (and many more). Do not, however, be confused by the website; the majority of the site is for a payed-for program, but the scholarship program is separate.

According to theĀ scholarship website:

The National Geographic scholarship program generally considers students whose parents’ combined income is less than $50,000

A number of full scholarships will be awarded to eligible students in the summer of 2011. Please note that we expect to receive many scholarship applications and allocation of scholarship funds is competitive.

This scholarship is available to students in grades 9-12. In other words, if you win a scholarship, they will cover the expenses of the Student Expedition. Not too bad!

Although this scholarship is somewhat limited (both by the $50,000- requirement and the fact that it’s eco-centric), if you have a deep interest in the environment and travel, but cannot afford to take a trip on your own, this may be just what you’re looking for.
